The late 20th century was a very turbulent time in American history. In 1976, Jimmy Carter was elected to the presidency, and he had many goals to help better America. However, on November 4th, 1979, a group of radical students seized the United States’ embassy in Tehran, Iran. This completely altered the course of American history and relations with the Middle East. This crisis had many impacts on the United States. It caused the Energy Crisis which in turn caused the Recession of 1979. The Iran Hostage Crisis also had political consequences for President Carter. It was a major factor that contributed to him losing the election of 1980 to Ronald Reagan. Additionally, this crisis led to many instances of racial discrimination toward†¦show more content†¦Carter responded to the seizure of the embassy and the taking of hostages by applying diplomatic and economic sanctions on Iran. Ten days after the start of the crisis, President Carter froze about $8 billion of Irania n assets. However, this did not rattle Khomeini, it empowered him. It was at this point that it was realized that a solution to this crisis would be harder than anticipated. Ayatollah Khomeini issued a set of demands in exchange for the hostages. First, the Shah must be returned to Iran to be put on trial. Second, the U.S. needed to issue an apology for previous American actions, and third the U.S. had to promise not to interfere in Iranian politics in the future. As expected, Carter did not comply with these demands. He tried to work out diplomatic negotiations with Iran using a third party, but those negotiations fell through (The Associated Press). President Carter was criticized heavily for not doing more to resolve the Hostage Crisis. Since Carter saw that a diplomatic solution was not going to come soon, he decided that the only way to solve the situation was by force. He employed a secret operation known as Operation Eagle Claw. The plan was to land helicopters and planes out side of Tehran, and then they would make their way to the embassy to rescue the hostages. Plot The plot of the novel is loosely based upon the life of a former slave namedMargaret Garner, who tried to kill all of her children when they were captured by herslave owner, and she did succeed in killing one. When the novel begins, Sethe and herdaughter, Denver, are living with the ghost of the baby Sethe killed when she was aboutto be recaptured. After another former slave, Paul D., arrives, he chases away the ghost,but soon a young woman named Beloved comes to Sethes home. This woman isstrangely similar to Sethes dead daughter, which is ironic because the word Beloved isthe only word engraved on her babys tombstone, though it is never entirely clear if thewoman truly is the babys ghost turned to flesh. Characters The women inBeloved are the stronger characters of the story because they are the ones who stay,despite their past. The men, however, have to run from it. When Sethe is raped by thenephews, she still finds the courage to move beyond the pain and her fear. Herhusband, Halle, only witnesses the rape and this is enough to drive him to smearing butteron his face from the insanity, never again capable of facing Sethe. Paul D. runs for morethan eighteen years from his memories. Even Sethes sons run when they can stand nomore of their fears. Baby Suggs withstood the agony of a lifetime of slavery and therealization of freedom, just to watch her daughter-in-law kill her grandchildren. Thoughshe became weary, even in the marrow of her bones, she remained because she and theother women knew what the men did not, which was that they had to lay down thesword and the shield by the river in order to swim through the pain. Irony When Sethe runsaway from from her owners, she vows that neither she nor her four children will ever beforced into slavery again. However, when her owner finds her, Sethe chooses to kill herchildren, because she could not allow her children to be owned or sold. This is ironicbecause Sethe is actually committing the ultimate act of ownership by taking from herchildren the freedom to decide for themselves whether to live or die. Though Setheknows that, as a slave, life was dead, her children had the right to discover this forthemselves.

During Yates trial, psychiatrist Park Dietz who was never Yates psychiatrist testified that she was not mentally ill, but had cleverly patterned her childrens killings after an episode of Law and Order, where a woman drowned her children but was found not guilty by reason of insanity. There was just one problem with Dietz testimony: Law and Order had never filmed a storyline even vaguely like the episode Dietz described. On the basis of Dietz misleading testimony, Yates was granted a re-trial in 2006. She was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and transferred from prison (where she had spent four years) to a state mental hospital for treatment. Betsy Schwartz, executive director of the Mental Health Association of Greater Houston, said the verdict brought justice to a woman whose severe mental illness was never in question. Dietz, the psychiatrist who said his false testimony was an honest mistake, was never indicted for perjury (Ramsland). Conclusively, it is evident that Andrea’s mental illness journey began shortly after the birth of her first born child. Andrea began to have violent visions: she saw someone being stabbed. She thought she heard Satan speak to her. However, she and her husband had idealistic, Bible-inspired notions about family and motherhood, so she kept her tormenting secrets to herself. She didnt realize how much mental illness there was in her own family, from depression to bipolar disorder—which can contribute to postpartum psychosis.

The competition course has been certified in accordance with 104.2.2C(4). The water depth is a minimum of 8 feet to 16 feet. Warm-up/warm-down lanes available at all times. RULES:Current United States Swimming rules will govern the conduct of the meet. Southeastern Swimming safety guidelines and warm up procedures will be in effect. The use of audio or visual recording devices, including a cell phone, is not permitted in changing areas, rest rooms, locker rooms, or from behind the starting blocks. Deck changing into or out of swimsuits other than in locker rooms or rest rooms is prohibited. In the interest of safety and accident prevention, coaches and swimmers are asked to observe all posted pool rules and facility rules referred to in this meet information and to conduct themselves in a safe and prudent manner. Birmingham Swim League will not accept responsibility for anyone who climbs to an unsafe height for any reason. Officials must be members of USA Swimming and must present evidence of certification as required by Southeastern Swimming. Should there be any questions, meet officials will recognize only coaches or their designated representatives. Officials' meeting will take place in the hospitality room 1 hour before each session. Timers' meeting will take place at Clerk of Course 30 minutes before each session. ELIGIBILITY:All swimmers must be 2016-2017 USA Swimming Registered athletes. USA registration number must be listed on the entry form. No entry will be accepted without current registration numbers. There will be no on-deck USA Swimming membership registration. Coaches and officials must present evidence of certification as required by Southeastern Swimming. A swimmer's age on the first day of the meet will determine his or her age for the entire meet. Swimmers must be 11 years old to enter "Senior" events. Any swimmer entered in the meet must be certified by a USA Swimming member coach as being proficient in performing a racing start or must start each race from within the water. When unaccompanied by a member-coach, it is the responsibility of the swimmer or the swimmer's legal guardian to ensure compliance with this requirement. WARM-UPS:Morning sessions will have one or two warm-ups depending on entries. Depending on size of meet, there may be designated sprint lanes at end of each morning warm-up. Afternoon sessions will be OPEN warm-ups with sprint and pace lanes to be designated the last 25 minutes at the discretion of the Meet Referee.
